The environment as the third teacher

The educators in Reggio Emilia speak of the environment as the ‘third educator’ as each of their classrooms is staffed by two teachers.

In 1998, Reggio Children published a research project exploring the critical importance of the environment. This publication Children, Spaces, Relations: meta-project for an environment for young children is the result of research initiated by Reggio Children in conjunction with the Domus Academy of Design in Milan. The aim of this project was to bring together the pedagogical philosophy of the Reggio Emilia preschools with different experiences and expertise from architects and designers representing innovations in the area of culture and design.
