AnchorREsearch Conversations NSW

REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW OPEN for REsearch Conversations for 2018!

REsearch Conversations is a Reggio Emilia Australia Information Exchange (REAIE) network group that meets in the northern suburbs of Sydney, organised by a team of volunteer convenors.

It is designed for teachers who have a desire to intentionally come together to build strong collegial connections and to explore the inspiration and provocation of the Reggio Emilia Educational Project in Northern Italy.

Each term we host and facilitate opportunities for educators to connect and learn together through professional conversation, research and the sharing of ideas. A strong value that guides our times together is a commitment to ‘delve deep’ in our thinking about the nature of education, learning and humanity.

Our research in 2018 will be shaped by the notion of education as a ‘landscape of transformation’. This focus has been chosen as a way of pre-researching ideas of transformation ahead of the 2019 REAIE Conference in Perth, which carries the same theme.

2018 MEETING DATES

Tuesday 6 March - Highfields School Library, Lindfield

Tuesday 8 May - Highfields School Library, Lindfield

The Language of Clay - NEW DATE ADDED!

When: Wednesday 20 June

Where: Northcote Pottery, 142 -144 Weston Street, Brunswick East

Time: 5.30pm for 6.00pm - 7.30pm

This event is for REAIE members only and the cost is $15 per person (incl gst).

This is a stand-alone session and will cover the same content as the previous workshops held in June.

Clay is a wonderfully malleable material. It (is) a language for exploring and communicating ideas (and) enables children to make their ideas visible” (Kolbe, Ursula. 2007. Rapunzel’s Supermarket, p 67)

Clay invites exploration and can be a rich and powerful tool for children to create with, on both a small or large scale. There are many basic techniques that the children benefit from mastering when working with clay, such as the skills needed to create coils, pinch pots and successfully joining pieces of clay together. As adults, it is important that we experience a material before we introduce it to children. We need to have opportunities to explore the possibilities it can offer prior to researching alongside them.

Come along and be part of this practical workshop and discover the many possibilities that clay provides by learning basic techniques and terminology, refreshing your skills or simply gaining confidence to use clay in your programs.

REAIE Members: $15 (incl gst)

Registration is essential as numbers are strictly limited

'Children as citizens: I am a citizen'  with Jill McLachlan

"A large extent of children’s lives are lived within educational settings and as such it is of paramount importance to consider what sort of lives children are able to live within those environments. What might children learn about community through their educational experience? What rights and responsibilities do they have? What roles are available to children? What kind of power or influence do children have in relation to the way their lives are designed? By exploring who we are and asking how we want to live together in community, we shed light on our shared identity, and therefore our culture. To build culture together we must learn how to listen and how to dialogue so that through our conversations we might find the shared soil of our hopes and dreams.” (Excerpt from Unearthing Why: Stories of thinking and learning with children, Britt & McLachlan, 2015, p.146)

Through the educational project in Reggio Emilia we are invited to see children through an empowering and optimistic lens, recognising them as citizens of today and not just citizens of a far off future. From this perspective, children are welcomed as people with rights, responsibilities and significant capacity to build and sustain culture through their relationships. As an educator, Jill has been strongly influenced and inspired by this proposal. Jill will be sharing stories from her own journey as an educator and co-researcher with children. Her stories will invite teachers to reflect on this notion of children as citizens and draw attention to the importance of welcoming difference as we build culture together.

Based in Sydney, Jill McLachlan works as an educational consultant and speaker. Wherever she goes Jill leaves behind her love of learning and her passion to see educators equipped and inspired to teach with intention, imagination and insight. Her experiences as an educator and leader in a range of educational settings gives Jill’s stories a grounded reality that enables listeners to walk away confident that change, transformation and joy in teaching are possible. She strongly advocates for educational approaches that give children agency and voice in the learning process and prioritise ways of teaching and learning founded within a social constructivist perspective. Her stories gently challenge traditional approaches that position the teacher as the expert or hero in the room. Instead Jill invites educators to reimagine their role as co-researchers, facilitators, questioners, and companions of children in a search for meaning and connections.

In 2015, her co-authored book, ‘Unearthing Why: Stories of thinking and learning with children’ (Britt & McLachlan), was published through Pademelon Press. The book is a collection of stories offering a distinct and hopeful outlook of the future of education. Each chapter invites the reader to consider and celebrate the complexity and beauty of children’s capacity to learn, think and be together.

Adelaide Network Group

When: Wednesday 30th May 2018

Where: University of South Australia, Magill Campus, Amy Wheaton Building, Lecture Theatre H1-44, click here for a map.

Time: 5.00pm - 6.30pm

We invite you and your team to join us as we extend the conversations many of us started with the recent visit from Tiziana Filippini and embark on a new journey to look at the notion of transformation in preparation for the 2019 REAIE conference.

Educators from St Peter’s Girls ELC Caterina Pennestri, Mel Angel and Kate Mount will provoke our thinking by discussing one of their current projects: Transformation of a space; creating a path to our heritage

The vehicle for this transformation of space was their collaboration with Christine Cholewa, public artist and resident of Adelaide. Christine extended their learning exposing the children and educators to natural and industrial materials. She shared with the educators new techniques and perspectives of art languages which enriched their knowledge about learning opportunities. The creation of the path has become a journey for their community who have been invited to participate from the design through to completion and is now a shared public work of art.

We continue to welcome new members to the Adelaide Network. If you are new, we hope that after attending a meeting you will join REAIE as a financial member and look forward to attending further meetings, receiving newsletters, the Challenge Journal and other professional learning opportunities.
